Arizona summers are rough on technology. When ambient temperatures climb past 110°F outside, the inside of a closet that holds your switch and modem can easily hit 95°F or more — and electronics start failing well before that.

If you run a small business in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, or anywhere else in the East Valley, here’s the checklist we walk our managed IT clients through every spring.

1. Move the network gear out of the closet

The single most common cause of mystery summer outages we see is a switch or modem cooked in an unventilated closet. If your network rack lives in a coat closet or storage room with no airflow, that’s your first project. Even a small thru-wall vent or a 6-inch fan on a thermostat helps.

2. Check your UPS batteries

Heat shortens the life of UPS (battery backup) units dramatically. If your UPS is more than 3 years old and lives in a warm spot, the battery is probably already weak. Test it before monsoon season — not during the first power blip.

3. Clean the dust out of workstations

Dust buildup acts like a blanket on CPU and GPU coolers. A 5-minute compressed-air cleaning of every desktop tower in the office can drop internal temperatures by 10–15 degrees. Do this once a year minimum, ideally before summer.

4. Make sure your server room AC is on a separate thermostat

If your server room shares an AC zone with the front office, weekends and after-hours setbacks can roast your equipment. Server rooms should hold steady at around 72°F, 24/7.

5. Test your backups before monsoon storms hit

Monsoon season brings power surges and outages. The worst time to discover your backup hasn’t run in 6 months is the day after a lightning strike fries your server. Pull a test restore now.

6. Update your contact list for after-hours emergencies

Who calls who when the AC fails on a Saturday and the server room hits 95°F? If you don’t have an answer, write one down before July.
